Temple Grandin

I believe that the first time I read about Temple Grandin and her contributions was in Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. As traumatizing as it was to read about the inhumane conditions in particular slaughterhouses, for humans and animals alike, it was refreshing to read about Temple's innovations.

After learning that she is a person with autism, I'm struck by the manner in which she processes and makes meaning of her environment. I will likely carry the image of her brain working like a search engine, such as Google, especially as I start to encounter people with autism in my clinical work. The world of autism is something with which I have very little experience.

Additionally, this essay has made me eager to read more about her. Now, if I only had the time!

First Day in the Trenches

Well today wasn't the "official" first day of school, but the strain in my wallet ($600 on textbooks) and the build up of stress (orientation meeting) tell me that it was. Clinic begins in less than a week!
